Headlight improvement

Noticed some conversion kits out there and wondered if anyone has converted from stock halogens to HID/xenons, was it worth it and is heat generated inside the headlight enclosure an issue? My truck's brights aren't half as good as the low beams on my car. I'd be doing this to a 2002 F250 super duty.

What size wire is feeding your current headlights? Running 12 or 14 gauge wire directly from the battery to relays (and cutting out a bunch of lighter-gauge wire) can really brighten them up.

I have a 1999 F250 and the head lights were real dull. I tried the headlight kits with no luck. I found head lights out of a 2004 ford and put them in and now we have lights. The ones out of the 2004 are clear and do not have the lines in it like the older ones do.

My current lenses are the newer clear type but the factory halogens are very yellowish and don"t project. Headlight aim is a compromise for running empty/pulling a loaded trailer.
Was the kit you tried 35 or 55 watt?

I 2nd the using relays and putting full voltage to the headlights. Makes a huge difference.
Id recommend getting some good bulbs too. Stay away from the blue ones.

I was never happy with the headlites on our 03 Dodge Durango till i put in the Bright star bulbs NOW you can see . same with my 95 Dodge 3500 , my mini Mag lite seems brighter , going to change them out with the Bright Star bulbs. Years back when the head lites were the old ROUND sealed beam and the 6015 was the standard bulb if you went with the 6016 bulb it was a huge difference . That was the bulb that was used on semi's .

My 01 f250 super duty is a plain jane with sealed beam headlights. They give way more light than any of my wife's cars with plastic headlights. Really noticeable when passing someone as you get ahead of them and switch to bright lights.

ok on a dark night raise the hood and turn on the lights , see all that light coming out the back and sides of the light ? next day pull the lights tape up the foward faceing lens , and get some aluminum spray paint and coat the lamp houseing ,plug the holes where the bulbs go ,let dry and do a second coat and when the second coat is dry ,next day , use flat black over the silver aluminum when good and dry reinstall
did my dodge I was losing about 25% of the light out the rear of the lamp houseing ,only 75% going down the road , now its got great lights!!

I replaced the dull, cloudy ones on my 2001 F-350 with 2004 style clear ones from headlightsdepot.com. They look great and are brighter. About $90 a pair shipped to the house.

and if the lenses are cloudy.. get one of those polishing kits.

worked wonders on my 2 99 fords..

Installed 55/65W rated bright star bulbs ($47!) and it is "somewhat better" and have a little better side illumination than the originals. May have to tweak my aim up and to the right some and also try the relays with #14 or 12 wires to the battery direct suggestion. The factory wires definitely are light gauge.

Truck-lite is also making LED headlights now that are supposed to be really good, but only for sealed-beam replacement, not aftermarket for the plastic housings.

Funny you should ask this question. I am going through replacing a burnt bulb in my 05 F-250 right now.

The previous owner installed Xenon 8000K hid lights with 35 watts. I really really like them, the people I meet on the road don't. Make sure to get the ones with the relays for dim or bright lights. Xenon gas doesn't produce the heat like halogen bulbs. They are actually cooler and use less power to operate than your factory lighting. I suggest getting the 6000K or 8000K light kit. The higher the number, the more "blue" and darker the light will be. 6000K are bright white and improve vision greatly at night. The bulbs last a lot longer than standard halogen bulbs, but do cost about $30 each when replacing. It's a simple conversion and can be installed in about an hour. I strongly suggest them if you don't like your factory lighting. You might check with your local police to make sure they are legal to use. Some states they are illegal unless it is a factory installed system. The local cop I asked said he wished he had them lol.
