just installed brakes on all 4 wheels of my 16' enclosed trailer, should these brakes stop the vehicle completly or just slow it down under a load?
my other trailers will lock the wheels up and this one wont.

let me know
thanks

Did you replace the entire backing plate with new magnets or just the shoes,Did you check the faces of the drums where the magnets run, are they flat and smooth? Lots of little things keep Ele brakes from working properly that most people overlook.Most electric brakes won't slide the wheels on a loaded trailer, especially the 10 in ones on a 3500# axle.

replaced complete backing plates
the drums were not completly smooth where magnets go on all the drums, does that matter?

If you made good electrical connections. Check them all! Hold the controller and pull it some, get them a little hot. Then check to make sure the brakes are adjusted. Should get better but might not slide with the trailer loaded. Vic

Hi
I would say it does matter. The magnet relies on surface area to grab the drum if the magnets new it"s face will be flat. if the drums scored the high ridges is where the magnet grabs more.
The low spots won"t do much until the magnet beds to the grooves, thus reducing the efficiency of the brake.

also the rough may wear the magnet down quicker. This is also the same Idea for the brake drum part the shoes run on! I did one Trailer, and the thing was so chewed up it had worn right down to the wires in the magnet and that"s why the brakes didn"t work.

There should be spec numbers in the drums to tell you how much a person can machine off the brake and magnet surface, if your drums won't go to within this spec with machining, junk them and buy new!.

It usually is that the brakes are n ot set tight enough. Most people don't know that they have to be set tight enough to just start to drag, then back off just a bit. If you spin the hub and don't hear rubbing they are not tight enough.

Well from what i was told by the people at Dexter there trailer brakes were made to SLOW YOU DOWN and not do all the stopping . As i had a problem one time and i was close to the factory with my truck and trailer and went in to talk to someone about the problems i was having , the next thing i knew they had me back my truck and trailer into there service bay and THEy went to work on it and they replaced everything and when i asked how much they told me N/C as there were some problems with the brakes that were on my trailer and that there was a recall and mine was never done . The head service manager for Dexter told me that the electric brake was NOT designed to totally stop you but to slow you down and the tow vehicle was what was to do the stopping. He told me that if you want stopping power then ya need to go to the Vac Hyd. or air brake systems .
