I am thinking of purchasing a P.J. low pro.Gooseneck 20ft.with 10 ft Hydraulic dove tail.7800 lbs / 22500 gvw.
Planning to pull with 09 3/4 ton duramax/Allison.
Most loads will be antique tractors to shows. Tractors weigh 3500 to 8000lbs.
Your thoughts on pulling with 3/4 Chev Duramax. And P.J. brand.
Thanks,Tony

I don't have a Gooseneck but a 7 ton bumper pull PJ trailer. Its a low profile 102" 24 foot ( 21Ft. flat 3Ft. dove with 3 stand up ramps)The top of the floor of trailer is 31"off ground. I pull it with 97GMC K 1500 heavy duty, with 5.7 Vortec. I haul old tractors and my heaviest is a Farmall 450(6,900lbs.). This PJ trailer tracks great and empty you don't even know its behind you. Loaded at 55 and 60 MPH,it tracks straight with no sway.

It's pretty simple really, the engine is willing the rest of the truck will be found wanting. Not to mention you will be over the CDL needed threshold.

Truck weighs say 7500 lbs
Trailer 7800 lbs
Heavest tractor 8000 lb
-------------------------------
23,300lbs
You are at least 2K over the Gross combined truck ,trailer, tractor rating of your truck. Engine good brakes not so good.

Now your load capacity of your truck is say 10,500 lbs plus your trailer is 22,500 lbs. This equals a 33,000 lbs ability. The max. ability to keep from needing a CDL in your case is 26,000 lbs.

Look at the data plate on the door of your truck. It will tell you that the truck has a GVWR of xxxx (10.5k in example above).

This means your trucks curb weight empty. Plus weight of passengers, plus weight of luggage, tools, jumper cables and all the crap in the glove box, door panels and console, etc. etc. This leaves you with an amount xxxx that you can haul in the truck bed and or trailer tongue weight.

The GCWR is a total weight that the manufacturer says your truck can safely handle (read stop the moving load). This rating tells you what size trailer you can legally tow with your truck.

In our example above your truck weighed 7.5k your GCWR is 20.5k. A 14k gooseneck empty puts you over the legal GCWR of your trucks data plate by 1k.

I have a 2008 28 ft PJ gooseneck. LOVE the way it pulls, lights are in a good conduit which is good, the only complaint from me is that "PJ" stands for "Poor Job" of painting. Their powder coat paint, SUCKS!!!! Mine is only used once or twice in the summer, and sits inside the rest of the time, and it is totally rusty. Looks like it is 20 years old. That is my only complaint. I know preparation is everything when it comes to painting. They may be a little lazy in that department.
