MAP21 which congress approved this past summer states farmers or farmhands crossing state lines will not need CDL,medcard,drugtesting,medical certificates,log books ,or vehicle inspections and trucks over 26,000#s are exempt within 150 miles of home.These vehicles must be equipped with special license plate.I checked at our local courthouse and they dont have a clue about any special plate.Most DOT officers are not up on this.I personally would feel better if I knew the people I meet on the road at least know how to drive a big rig .Thats one of the reasons automatic transmissions have became so popular as they dont know how to shift.I like being exempt but safety should also be thought about and trucks that are not safe and drivers that cant drive look like an accident ready to happen.

"These vehicles must be equipped with special license plate"
"I checked at our local courthouse and they dont have a clue about any special plate"

That's because there is no "special" or "new" plate. The rule reads....
(c) Is equipped with a special license plate or other designation by the State in which the vehicle is registered to allow for identification of the vehicle as a farm vehicle by law enforcement personnel;

A common Farm Plate will do the job.

There are some changes with Map 21 but farmers had most of these exemptions already.

But keep reading. Map 21 also increases funding for things like enforcment of fuel tax evasion.

John,I was refering to a pickup pulling a gooseneck when I asked about special plate.I have farm plates on our semis.This forum seems to always ask about DOT #s and tractors going to shows,pulls or rides and if they need to stop at scales.What I wrote was in our Farm Bureau Spokesman and is also in a pamplet given to me by a DOT officer.

the problem is some states dont do the farm plate, here in nm, you better be leagle for the road, both driver and truck or better keep it home, lowest plate here is the wd plate, [ weight distance] which allows the truck to operate within state,no crossing state lines, over 26000 the driver must be full class A with medical card

there is a class B which allows you to run a straight truck,the problem is the towing limit on a class B is the same as a regular car drivers licence 10,000 lbs, so unless you driving a cement truck,or a roll off trash truck, its not too good, as like in my dump truck a class b will let you drive the truck, but you cant take your backhoe with you behind it

I live in Iowa and they told me that going into NE I don"t need a DOT number as long as I am not hauling my tractor for money or winning cash at the shows I attend. Pickups with trailers must exit to be weighed in NE, but they may just wave you on, Iowa requires any vehicle over 10,000 to weigh. IA calls a pulling tractor with sponsorship a commercial venture same with a race car.

Oh yeah they told me I only need to be legally registered for weight in Iowa. Not actually sure how that works since both states have very diffrent ways of liscencing weights and in IA can fall under a couple of diffrent exemptions dependiong on how you read the guideline book.

so farmers that drive all kinds of machinery, you dont feel safe not having a cdl? how bout some dude that drives cross country that has a cdl and cant speak a word of english????Maybe they better look at the rules that are in place now

I am not worried about most farmers, its the inexperienced person that never driven anything bigger than a mini van that is legal to haul 88000# legally.They at least need a chaffers license with airbake endorsement.They can probably talk or text also as they are exempt.In the fall here you see more than a few with tandems in ditch and new trailers with damage to sides all from inexperience.Just my opinion as I am going to probably not keep my CDL or med card as it is not required but then again they might change it back so I probably wont.

So you are happy-OK then with Grandpaw John or Aunt Mabel who always drove Olds & Buicks for 50-60yrs now getting in their 40ft.$300,000 MH pulling their 30ft.boat or Dingy and driving 60-80MPH down the Interstate passing everyone in sight.
