I am looking at a 2002 ford f250 with a 5.4 gas motor and six speed manual transmission. Has anybody had any experience with this combination it would be used for pulling a few trailers and other farm work.

i have diesel and auto, was thinking of downgrading to a gasser, same questions you have, things to check if the towing cap rate, if a auto or manual is better,, the 5.4, you will have a better pulling chance than the 4.6.. being the year, check and see if those were the years with the spark plugs that give everyone fits, two pieces that break when you change them, if you don't know/do it right, or if they are the newer ones

IMO pick up trucks dont get any better than 99-07 Fords with 5.4 engines as long as your not towing 10,000 lbs every day, they are not tow monsters. Had a 2000 that when I sold it had 315,000 miles on it and driving an 05 with 118,000 and both were/are extremely good trucks. Both burned just a bit of oil as do all I have ever been around and if you get both lazy about checking and changing it you will run them out of oil. Spark plugs can have issues but if you change them twice as often as everyone says you need to and you will solve both major problems, sticking in the heads and coil pack problems.

Have a 5.4 with the auto, works well, we tow up to 8 ton monthly not a power house but works well enough. If you towed every day get the 6.8l v10.

Sounds like you got lucky. I have heard alot of horror stories on those Fords. Between spark plugs ,cam phasers ?,and dual overhead cam timing chain issues.

I have heard about the those an drive problems but never known of any personally. Both type spark plugs being the main problem area. I took mine out early on, coated then with Ford Nickle never seize, torque them and replace every 50K and no other issues.

I have a 03 F250 5.4 4X4 extended cab. I bought it new and have 170000 miles. I have pulled a 4800 lb. pulling tractor thousands of miles. And a 10000 lb. backhoe hundreds of miles. and 16 bales of hay hundreds of miles. It does ok, probably all the power I need. But I live where it is relatively flat, no mountains just hills. Mine is a Automatic also, no problems. But I have serviced the transmission every 50 to 60 thousand miles. Also changed the plugs. Have just needed one coil pack. Mechanic said I had pressure washed motor to good and filed with water. Drove a 6 L Chevy with a stick trans. Guy told me was a bad combo. The reason was. It was hard to rev it up high enough to make it pull, had to shift it all the time, and really keep it spinning like 4500 rpm. The auto just does that for you and you don't notice. Vic

had a 08 250 5.4 pulled great but exhaust bolts break off cause they are to small and cat converter clogged up also but ford will not recall them. but they will replace free if they clog. i would get a v-10 like it better 7.3 diesel would be best 99-03
