6v92 detroit oil question

Iv read and read about the type and grade of oil to use in these 6v92 2 stroke motors but seems i cant find any straight 40 around, all i read is not to use muti grade oil.. but no reason why....i was thinking about mobil 15-40 "witch i have 2 cases of"..with a gallon or so of lucus.. but i just dont know..what u guys running or have ran in these motors.. .. this motor is in a single axle gmc truck.. gona be useed to move a dozer from job to job..but not used that much mabe 2 times a week or less
any help??

the sf-2 low ash is a must as i understand it. also gotta be careful with additives! go to tractor site archives-good info from B&D and others----

Straight 40 weight is a little better. Shell Rotella T makes a straight 40 weight for these engines. If you have a detroit diesel dealer you should be able to get an oil there as well. Also check with oil distributors in your area for any of it. Not sure if 30 weight is a good idea or not.

I think you can get by using the 15WX40 if it is the old formulation for engines before 2007. Also change it twice as often. I am running 15X40 in a Detroit. I think Valvoline Racing 40w would be good but would be hard to find. HPO Valvoline 40 is what you should use, but I don't think it is available. All the oil rigs with 2 cycle Detroits on them. are using strait 40w if they can get it and 30w if they can't.

You can use the 15-40 in it. The not idling it is more of an issue than the oil. Drive it like your mad at it and it will be fine. Also don't try to lug it down . It will fall flat on it's face.

I have a 1978 ford 9000 with 6V-92 we pull a 26" stacker with 2 cars have been running retella 15-40 with gallon 1/2 of lucas oil stabalizer,so far so good,1st 300 mi trip on it used 1 gal.on return trip used none,I try and run it at 1900 to 2000 RPM,180 eng.temp. oil psi at idle is 5 psi,down the road its 45to 50 psi,main oil fltr always looks good when pulling paper pleets apart,718,000 on motor,in framed at 600,000.

They originally speced a single weight 30-40 weight, low ash oil. Most newer diesel oils are low ash. Make sure the API- CD-II spec is on the jug, that is the oil spec for a 2 cycle Detroit diesel.

The reason for the low ash oil is that Detroit 2 cycle motors have a little piston ring very near the top of the piston, called a "fire ring".
Oil with too much ash can cause fire rings sticking in the ring land.

Not sure on oil but we had a L9000 with a 6-71. The best advice is, if it ain't leaking oil something is really wrong. And run it like you just bumped your head.

we have a 671 in a gmc and it leaks oil out a tube off the engine. we were told if it doesnt drip oil then it is fixing to cost a lot of money. they say they have wet sleeves in them and that is the excess oil from the sleeves that leaks. i drove ours hard and havent had any problems. it was sittting up for 7 or 8 years before we got it and havent done anything but put a primer pump on it. we had it for10 or so years now.
