Thanks for the helpful suggestions, guys. The weather is back up above zero again so we will get the truck back in the shop and check fuel pressure as a starting point. Most of you know I specified 12 valve because they switched to 24 mid year 1998. Thanks again and I'll post what is the diagnosis.

i just talked with him and it does have a 24 valve in his 97 but it was changed to that before he bought it ten years ago but i know i saw 24 valve on the engine. not sure the reason why but it is in there. i had a 95 and got a 2005 cummins now. sorry for the confusion

it might be something between the 3/4 ton and and the one ton duallys cause his is a 97 and has a 24 valve cummins in it.

The 6BT was replaced with the Cummins ISX in 98.5, and I don't think the two were ever produced at the same time. Most 1998 model trucks I've seen have 12V engines. It is possible to put the 24V heads on a 6bt engine with some modifications.
