Transmission adapter plate.

I need to bolt up a 1993 5.9 Cummins turbo diesel motor to an NV-4500 5 spd. tranny that came out of a 1996 Chevy 3500. I have 2 bell housings. One will bolt up to the motor. The other will bolt up to the tranny. Neither will bolt up to both. I understand that someone makes an adapter plate that bolts to the back of one of the bellhousings that solves the problem. So, I'm either in need of such an adapter plate, or a transmission out of a Dodge. Any help would be appreciated.

You can check with advance adapters, ultimately you will probably be better off using a dodge trans.

You need the following:
1) 94-up flywheel housing
2) 94-98 starter
3) proper input shaft
4) Dodge bellhousing

Get the right parts and you'll be done coming here and asking questions about how to make mismatched parts match.

I appreciate your reply. However, we already tried a 1994 flywheel housing. The bolt pattern was incompatible. And both of our bellhousings are Dodge's. But I think we may have found a solution from a company called Diesel Specialists. They said they make the adapter plate we need; and we already changed the input shaft.

im with cdl, this would be much easier to just use a dodge tranny that fits that engine, then if needed, [ depending on the rear end flange you can easily make the change with the u joint from the dodge to the gm

So, if I understand you correctly, you don't feel that the NV-4500 tranny is any better than the Getrag Dodge tranny, or at least not enough better to be worth the trouble?

They are either not Dodge/Cummins or not NV4500 bellhousings then. The smallblock uses a different pattern than the Cummins, that is a lot smaller.

The NV4500 is a better trans than the G360. Not an uncommon swap in the first gen Cummins trucks.

I found one on a 1992 Dodge 350. But it's bolted up to a 360 gas motor, not a Cummins diesel. I assume it's a Getrag, but I don't know.

They are not especially cheap, but Cummins has a B series flywheel housing (bolts to the back of the engine block, and the bellhousing bolts to it) that has a chevy bellhousing pattern. You can get flywheel housings to fit chevy, ford, or dodge patterns because Cummins made re-power packages to replace gas engines in industrial applications with 4BT and 6BT diesels. You can also get cummins factory motor mounts to bolt in place of small-block gassers.

We already have the motor mounts. The motor is in place. From your description, I'm not sure if the flywheel housing you mention will help us. One of the bellhousings we have will already bolt up to the chevy tranny, and to the motor, but it binds on the clutch. The bellhousing that does not bind on the clutch will bolt up to the motor but not to the tranny. So, this is the bell housing we need to accommodate. Advanced Adapters referred me to Diesel Specialists. They said they have the right adapter plate but I haven't been able to reach them to confirm this and order it. Meamwhile, we located a good 5 spd. tranny, probably a Getrag, in a 1992 Dodge 350, but with a gas engine. We may end up trying to use it instead.

The gas engine bellhousing won't fit the Cummins flywheel housing.

Somehow something you are trying to use isn't what you think you have.

i believe in 97 the chevy nv4500 went to the dodge bolt pattern and the input shaft bearing was changed too . sell the 96 and look for the dodge version even if it cost a little more. the right version will save in the end.

The NV4500 is a worthwhile upgrade over the G360. Guys doing a transmission swap don"t go with the G360 for a reason.
