265 massey diesel had starter off had it checked cant find anything wrong replaced cellonoid any way now starter is worse starter sticks now , any more help? thanks by the way was checked at a reputable starter shop

Some items to check.
Is the solenoid linkage free to move the drive pinion when not in the tractor?
What is the condition of the battery/s
What is the condition of the cables and their connections?
Did the starter go back into the tractor frame cleanly and mate perfectly with the housing?
What is the voltage at the starter terminal when trying to crank?
What do you mean by sticks? Jim

Could the starter drive be sticking?

I've seen the damage caused by a starter not disengaging.

What if he used screw driver instead of solenoid? That would tell if solenoid was sticking or drive was sticking.

Not sure which type solenoid it has. If it is a ford type r a Chevy type. Ford type common to have them stick due to weak battery welding things up. Chevy type can be a drive problem and gear hanging up on the ring gear or the plunger is not moving freely

Hello 1948Jr,

Your solenoid plunger may be sticking, must likely you have an alignment problem. You need to take the startef motor out to vetify that, and see if it sticks on the bench. Bet you its an alignment problem, or the starter needs to be shimmed,

Guido.

There is still a problem with the starter.

What happens is the plunger that the solenoid pulls in, it extends the drive into the flywheel, at the same time it depresses the button inside the solenoid that closes the contacts to energize the starter.

The shaft the drive slides on is spiraled. The spiral helps hold the gear firmly into the flywheel, but it also tends to push the plunger back into the solenoid. If the drive goes too far forward, the plunger is pushed too far back, which causes it to hold the button in, which keeps the starter energized.

Typical cause is the retainer/thrust washer at the end of the shaft where the drive slides on shatters, or wears down into the nose cone, letting the drive spiral too far out on the shaft, pushing the plunger too far back.

Pull the starter back off, look at that area, and/or take it back to the starter shop and explain what it is doing. If they had it apart, it may have the wrong fork, or the fork is in backward, or the wrong length drive gear. It is not an unheard of problem. If they say it is, they haven't been paying attention. To double prove the starter is the problem, disconnect the small wire from the S terminal on the solenoid. Jump the S terminal to the battery terminal, ( be absolutely sure it is in neutral!!!) see if the starter jams in. If it does, that proves it is not in the wiring or the starter switch.

Low voltage will weld the solenoid contacts. Load test the battery and go over the cables and connections
