rotary mower size for Massey Ferguson 50

I am looking at Woods rotary mower for my MF50 and would like advice. I have a 7' woods on a Case 930; so I am thinking 5' or 6' with 1" cutting. Or WoodsBB72X? I think there is $900 price difference. Thank you
 
A decent MF 50 will handle a 6' rotary cutter just about anywhere if it's a Perkins diesel. Continental gasser? Most places but not so well.

I'd say it depends on how you plan to use it. I have a healthy M.F. 65 gasser with a five foot rotary. If I am cutting four foot tall fescue down to four inches tall, I have to run in low 3rd.

I guess if you decide on a six foot you can still take a four or five foot pass if six makes the 50 snort.

Take into consideration the weight of the mower also. The top of the line models get kind of heavy to lift.
 
I run a 5? Bush Hog with an Allis 5030 that has 26 PTO hp. On the other hand, it does have super slow gears available which comes in handy for tough slogging.

The MF50 has at least 32 PTO HP
 
My preference would be to have one to cover the wheel tracks. Then adjust your speed to the toughness of your mowing. Bush Hog or finish mower type would make a difference too.
 

I have been running a Woods BB-60 on an 8N Ford. Growing up we had a 8N and dad added a new MF 50 (134 cu in gas) after he purchased a neighboring farm. For my use, fence rows, lane to the woods, road sides, etc. the 8N handles the 60" Woods fine.

The MF 50 has several advantages over the 8N: a little more power, live Pto and most important a 6 speed transmission. The MF 50 should handle the 72" width fine since you could simply down shift for tall thick grass etc. Note, the MF 50 was later available with a Perkins at 38 HP - yes that would be better power for a 72" width.

Also, many people focus the widest mower a tractor will handle. If you are mowing small areas a smaller width can be easier to work with.
