Found this on the ground near a power pole, any ideas on what it is? Tape is for size comparison.

We call them squirrel guards. I've never been able to look at the top of a transformer, but that prevents the squirrel from shorting two poles. Happened twice here before they started using the guards. Always find the dead squirrel at the bottom of the pole and of course the transformer tripped out. gobble

I like that. Instant fryed squirrel dinner. Anyhow, many years ago I saw the aftermath of a red tail hawk and the power lines. Wasn't a whole lot left. Down here in south jersey with the bird populations increasing over the years the power company has needed to rerout the high power wires on top. Several eagles, and ospreys have literally Blown up when they crossed over two of the phase wires. A smoking pile of feathers in a heap. They need to make the wires far enough apart where they interconnect from a side road to the main. Couple of extra long arms up top.

Tom T, that exact same thing happened to us on a pole in my front yard about 4 years ago. Utility guy had to bring a bucket truck and push a knife switch back up into place. Found the dead Red Squirrel on the ground below. Both the next door neighbor and I lost power.
