corn and beans

I'll bet after the extra strong wind we're having today there'll be even more. Some corn was already down bad, combines using a reel with the corn head.
 
A farmer friend of mine told me that it has been pretty dry where his farm is. He said that the corn developed out to about a 5" ear and about an 1 1/2" beyond that there's just a kind of nubbin with several small rounds on it. He say's when they go through the combine those nubbin's break off and out the back they go. There's some fields around here that look like you could run cattle on them till it freezes up. They are solid green!!

Well we have had a very wet fall. So any grain that was left sprouted and tried to grow.

If a combine does a 99% clean job in 200 BPA corn there are still 2 bushels spread over the ground. You only plant about 1/3 of a bushel of corn.
 
It takes 2 kernels of corn per square foot to equal a bushel an acre. Bet the field was planted with less than 1/2 bushel an acre to start with. Guys are starting earlier and that allows any lost grain to have plenty of time before a frost to re grow. You should see some of the corn fields that went down in wind that were combined early.

Are you sure it is corn and beans that you see coming up? Or is it the cover crop that was seeded AFTER the corn and beans were harvested? Sometimes the cover crop is seeded with an airplane and has already sprouted BEFORE the harvest.
