I have been watching these on ebay .Just picked one up for a hundred bucks plus 100 shipping. I'm happy with that . Also recently purchased a piston knurler all made in USA quality.

You did good. Those older tools have very little use in today's world, but for us who are maintaining the old classics, both tools would very useful.

dr sportster,

I don't know if your distributor tester is the same as one that I used about 50 years ago, but that one was great. You actually mounted the distributor in the unit and turned the machine on. It spun the distributor and lighted some circular lights on a large screen showing the exact make and break times on the points. It would show if the distributor shaft bearings were keeping the shaft straight and you could adjust the dwell on the points to get them exact.

I had a 1962 Chevy Impala Super Sport 409 with dual points in the distributor. The tester was great for getting both sets of points adjusted just right. I was thinking it was an Alemite unit, but maybe not.

The only one I've ever used is the Sun. It was very helpful when setting up the SHP 409 and SHP 327 dual point distributors. It was necessary when setting up the advance curve.

I've long been a W block fan.

When I went to auto tech school in the early 80s, the instructors had us pull every mechanical-point distributor (when doing a tune-up) and had us take them all apart, grease them and then put them on a distributor machine like you mentioned. The mechanical advance had to work perfect and the vacuum advance had to be within spec also. Yes, it was great for the occasional distributor that had dual points.
They told us just to keep every HEI distributor in the engine and just leave them alone.

I have one a X employer gave me it still works but in bad condition. He had it stored in a shed the roof leaked.

I was lucky enoufh to work in a shop he had all the neat sun stuff and knew how to use it. Another mechanic in the shop did all the distributor work for circle track cars folks from all over would bring them in. I had a 69 FLH he helped me set the distributor up we changed springs and played with the advance weights it would thump thump thump at idle it was the best starting Harley I ever had it always started with one kick...

Have fun with it...
