Solar fence charger

Our local box store has solar fence chargers with 5 mile range. Only need 1/2 mile range, would be easy to control weeds under it's location. Output is 1 joule. Would 16 ga wire work. Have you guys had any luck with solar fence chargers?

Yes it will work. The only issue is visibility. Tapes and rope style are easier to see for people and animals. Jim

My friend with horses has one. It wouldn't work so I took it apart. Battery was bad. I connected it to a 12v battery, it would make a clicking sound but wouldn't put out any voltage.

Solar cell was only thing on it that was good.

I also fixed a 120v charger for him. It had a bad thermal fuse. I replaced the fuse only to have the fuse go out as soon as weeds came in contact with fence.

When I grew up on a dairy farm in the 50-60's our fence charger would burn weeds that shorted out fence. It lasted for more than 10 years. Dad got out of the dairy business in 1967, the year I went to college.

I think I would be looking for a weed burner.

Back in those same '50's & '60's, it had been said that those weed burner fencers could/had set barns on fire, so I mounted mine outside of the barn on a fence post, and ran 120 volts out to it.

If you have power there, get a 110v low impedance charger. If not, get a 12v charger and a cheap deep cell battery. I have a 1 joule Stafix that’ll go about three weeks with my old boat battery.

I meant to mention, the issue that comes up with the cheaper solar chargers are that different components (solar panel, battery) often fail. And at that point its useless and I don’t think the mfg will fix them.
With the better ones, even if they’re hit by lightening they can usually be fixed.

It all depends on what you're trying to keep in. An older horse that's got plenty of graze, water and other feed, yeah. A mess of young stock, heifers, bull, sheep, goats, etc. - not a chance. 5 miles is the maximum distance under absolutely ideal conditions with ONE wire, and 1 joule is the max output under ideal conditions. 1 joule is no more than a tickle, hardly as bad as static electricity off a rug.

LOL
Apparently you haven't been hit by a 1 joule charger with a good ground. It's not pleasant. At all. I don't use much electric, but when I do all I have is a 1 joule charger. The cows won't go near anything that even looks like a white string after getting hit once.

They work fairly well for me keeping horses in. Three wires, probably one and a half miles total. Every time I touched it, it didn?t seem to give much of a shock until the one rainy day I touched it while wearing sandals. Different story. Only setback with them is that the winter will kill the battery without you knowing it if the temperature stays below 20? for any length of time.

I've been bit plenty of times. Trust me, there's no comparison between a 1 Joule charger and a 6 Joule charger. One snaps, the other puts you on the ground wondering if you've got clean underwear back at the house. Charging one wire is also a lot different that charging 6 or 8 sections of netting or using electric with sheep or goats. 1 joule is a waste of time in that setting.

I see no mention of running multiple sections, netting, sheep or goat? He specifically said 1/2 mile of a 16 gauge wire. Unless he's keeping in freshly weaned stocker calves or yearling bulls, 1 joule will do the job.

I have a couple of them, as soon as I get the ambition they are going in the dumpster. Not worth the time to hook them up.
