Flex-seal????

Our Ford Taurus has a moon roof window. Just lately it is leaking down on the headliner and down into the spare tire well. My first indication was the stinky wet carpet. Researched on line and found that Ford issued a service directive that the drain tubes needed to be rerouted due to back fall allowing the moon roof collection tray to overflow. I do not want to remove the headliner, we never open the moonroof window anyway, I just want to seal it up and be done with it. Any recommendations on a tape or method to do this that will hold up to 70-80 mile per hour wind and driven rain. I appreciate your input. thanks gobble

check the drain lines on the sunroof to be sure the are not clogged. most are located on the front left and front right of the sunroof, and the tubes run down the windshield posts. try some low pressure compressed air (turn the regulator down to 10 or 15 psi and shoot some air in there to clear em. you dont want to burst the lines inside the interior.

Silicone is what you want.We had one on the van we use to have and it was never used so I layed a bead of silicone around it and it never leaked as long as we had it

I've never considered sealing one up, but have cleaned the drains on many sunroof trays. You can take a piece of string trimmer line and stuff down the drain hole. I've also used a piece of wire/cable (choke throttle cable) but sometimes the wire wont feed down the tube. The front drains are in each corner, the rear drains are sometimes hard to get to because of the glass and track in the way.

Open it up and put a fat bead of 100% clear silicone close it up clean the excess and it will be good to go

Plain ol' silicon will trap moisture and promote rust. I had a body-man tell me that one. Automotive seam sealant from NAPA is a better way to go.

Windshield sealant? Any auto body shop will have it and will know how to apply it.

How old is the car and what is its condition? If it is a late model it may be worth the cost to fix the drains. Check your blue book value to see how much the moon roof adds to your resale value.

For Gods sake don't use any of that Flex Seal. I used it once and it cracked faster than anything else I could have used. Then anything else I could make the repair with wouldn't adhere over the Flex Seal. Use an automotive body sealant.

I used 2 inch aisle marking tape on a
old S-10 Blazer with a leaking after market sun/moon roof.
The Blazer was white and the tape was yellow
but it never leaked again. I sold it with the
tape still on it and told the new owner she
could remove it but would need a rain hat
if she did.

I used to be in the auto glass business and 95% of the leaking sunroofs were caused by clogged drain lines. As said above low pressure air will clear the drains. Never open the sunroof. I will never own a vehicle with a sun roof. Dumbest thing I ever heard of to have a hole in the roof!

I agree, why put a hole in a perfectly good roof??? I would try the air pressure blow out if I could find the discharge end of the rear drains. Cannot access the rear drains without removing the headliner. I know how that would end up, broken clips and holding devices that are only designed for a one time use, sagging rattling headliner, ac ductwork not lineing up. no not going there. gobble

Never intended to use flex-seal, just used it to get peoples attention so I could find a viable solution to my problem. Thanks for your input gobble

I don't sell or trade in cars. When they leave me they are all used up, next stop recycle yard. So sealing the moon roof is the best move for this car. Which still has plenty of life, just gotta keep the water out. gobble

I don't know what's in the Flex-Seal can but I buy spray undercoating (for wheel wells on vehicles) at the auto parts store for that kind of sealing. Priced right and lasts just fine. I guess it's not popular up North where they salt the roads since cars are rust proofed. We used it on non rust proofed cars down on the Texas gulf coast with the Gulf Salt everywhere.

I don't think I have ever blew a drain out that did not blow the hose off the nipple at the drain... In other words one is gonna blow mthe hose off and screw the deal up...

RTV is what I seal them up with like you I have no use for a hole in the roof and when it burns a valve are the transmission goes out it ain't worth fix'N... Keep the sunroof functional is Improving the resale value on a Taurus you gotta be kidding me...
