O/T Soleus Portable Air Conditioner Warranty

I have not quite old Soleus 12000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner. Yesterday it started throwing an E4 error code. Contacted the company today, they didn't seem surprised that it did. Said they would replace it under warranty if I faxed them the purchase receipt. Sounded good so far. Faxed them the receipt, they called back and said we're good to go, we ship you out a unit, you'll just need to send the defective one back to them in California. I asked who pays shipping they said you do but itshouldn't be that expensive. I called UPS and they said at least $110.00, could easily be more. Only paid $289.00 including tax for it new. Dosen't make sense to pay almost half as much to get another unit which may do the same thing and be out the money. I then asked bout a service manual or parts and they said they don't have any. In my opinion this is a poor way to run a company.

ran in to the same problem with a mini freezer from sears. not a sears brand. lasted 4 months and quit. had to ship it back for a free replacement. shipping was over a hundred dollars for a two hundred dollar freezer. the selling store would do nothing. sheesh!!, i junked the freezer.

It would be a long shot, but maybe call back, try to work your way up the chain of command.

Ask what they will do with the returned unit, chances are they will say they will dispose of it. Maybe they would let you send a vital component, like the circuit board, that would render it useless.

When the new one shows up call for a pick up tag,if they want it back they will give you one(they do not want it)

A couple of years ago I posted on here asking about what toaster to buy that's a bit better than the stuff from "The Land of Almost Right" at Wallaby World.

Suggestion was a "Cuisinart" @ $60 shipped from Amazon. It's been OK, but not spectacular, the other day, the flimsy plastic knob you use to "put the toast down" broke, leaving a REALLY sharp metal tab. (It's from "The Land of Almost Right", as well.)

Cuisinart/Conair has NO parts available, but since it's less than 3 years old, they are sending me a new toaster. When it gets here, I am to send the old one back at my expense, plus send them $10 for their trouble.

I played the game 'cause $20 is better than tossing a $60 toaster in the garbage, but, REALLY???

$0.79 and $5 shipping for a new knob would have cost less at but ends of this deal, IMHO.

Or just toss a functioning $60 appliance in the trash?

What would you guys have done?

(My plan to wrap the sharp protruding metal tab with friction tape was vetoed by "SWMBO".)

Service calls average $75 plus the parts and labor for the repair. It's best to simply think of all low priced appliances as disposable, especially if you are not located inside a large metro area.

If manufacturers were to design appliances to be repairable, stock the necessary repair parts everywhere in the world, write service manuals in 100 different languages, and train 10,000 repair technicians, the retail price of those appliances would be close to double the price of the disposable units. You might be willing to pay double the price for a repairable unit, but most people won't because it still costs too much to repair a now obsolete appliance compared to replacing it with a new one. There is no longer much demand for repairable appliances, so manufactures build what the customers are buying: low cost disposable appliances.

IMHO, if the company is willing to send you a new unit for the shipping cost, that is still a very good deal for you. The manufacturer is paying the shipping cost to deliver the new unit to you. Shop around for a lower shipping rate.

Think about it, why would they want the old one back? When they ship you one back it will be a reconditioned one. They will put a 2 dollar part in yours and send it to someone else.

Since you say they are in The Peoples Republic of California the state probably makes them take it back at "end of life" so all the nasty evil pollutants are are "recycled' (AKA shipped to some third world country).

Had similar problems with one of their dehumidifiers with an E4 code after one year of use. Found their service and support poor and ended up scrapping the unit. Wont ever purchase their products again

"Repair it with JB Weld."

UNFORTUNATELY, that's not possible 'cause SWMBO is a fan of the (SICKENING) show "hoarders" and keeping anything that might be useful or repairable for even a day is not allowed.

The broken part was tossed before it had even cooled off, of I knew about it so there's nothing to "repair"!
