Hydraulic Cylinder

Using the tilt bed lift on my Kawasiki Mule and held the up lift after it was fully extended. Maybe a bit too long! Now it won't return to the flat position. Took the cyl off the Mule and can't get it to return. Any suggestions?

Hard to say without seeing it. It could be the piston went too far and left the cylinder. If that is the case you would have to remove the retaining ring and the end cap and see if the O-rings have been damaged. I have one that does that from time to time but it pops out the retaining ring so there is no doubt the problem.

You're saying the cylinder rod won't go all the way back in?

Sounds like something has come loose or broken inside the cylinder.

Them being a self contained closed system and all. I do not think they will go up or down without the pump motor running.

Could as simple as a blown fuse or bad as a fried motor.

Price a new OEM one about a year ago. They wanted right at $1000 for the unit.

We installed a 12v Linear Actuator for $225. It is not as fast as the hydraulic lift. But it does the job.

Hello DelMN,

It sounds like the cylinder is hydro locked. The extra time must have put pressure on both sides of the cylinder. If that is the case, try cracking lose the return line and see if the cylinder will come down. LOTS OF PRESSURE! Be careful.....................

No lines to "crack".. They are self contained.. They will not go up/down, in/out unless the electric motor is turning.. The motor turns one way the fuild pumps one way, the lift rod raises the bed. Motor reverses the bed lowers.

It looks similar to the tilt unit on our outboard, that has a manual down valve that you can open with a screwdriver. You wouldn't want to be 10 miles up some Canadian lake and your outboard stuck in the up position!
