Hydraulic post driver

Who makes a good pull behind post driver? I have used Wheatheart out of Canada and they are a good brand. Have any of you used the Shaver brand?

To be clear, this is not for driving t-posts, but for wood and pipe.

I have a tractor mounted Shaver HD8, I’m happy with it, haven’t touched a post hole digger in years. When we tied into some big cedar posts I ended up pointing them to help them getting in the ground, but they were way bigger than the machine was intended to pound in. Puts a T post in like it’s not there, work beautiful on 5” posts, of course depends on how much rock is in your soil.

Shaver makes one of the best if not the best hydraulic post drivers. I have an HD-12 that is 15 years old. Never an issue with it. I drive a lot of rail road ties. I never sharpen an end on them. If in really hard ground I do drill a starter hole. The driver I have has a swing away auger so I can drill a 3 inch starter hole in less than a minute. For large posts it really makes them drive easier. Also if your needing exactly straight posts it helps too.

Shaver are good drivers. If you are wanting something a bit more heavy duty look up Kiwi drivers or go to the Kencove Fence site to see some other heavy duty brands. There is also an Amish outfit making a hydraulic driver with what looks like a modified jack hammer integrated into it. I understand they work pretty good. The differences in the heavier drivers will be the sliding track and the ability to tilt hydraulicly. Shaver still has 3 rollers which work OK but will not take the daily pounding and ocillations of professional use.

I forgot another great brand too. Danuser makes a real heavy duty post driver too. They are spring less too IRC. More like a drop hammer.

They make a skid steer mounted driver with tilt and a grapple. You can pick the post up and drive it never leaving the seat of the skid steer.

The only machine I have used at this point in my career is a Wheatheart from Saskatoon, Canada. It is a good pull behind/trailer set up and I would try them again, but no dealer is within 100 miles from best I can tell.

The Wheatheart has hydraulic adjustments in both the tilt and the course movements. Is the Shaver the same way?

I would agree with the comments on Shaver. I"ve got an older HD8 with 3-point mounts that I use. Parts are still available and fairly
reasonable, which is something to consider. Like all equipment, take care of it and don"t use it for more than it was designed for and it
will last a long time.

You can get Shaver drivers with either manual adjustment or hydraulic adjustment. I have manual on my HD8 and it's pretty easy to set the
angles for driving posts. Just make sure you get the attachment for holding the posts against the driver. Mine was older and didn't come
with it (all new Shavers do now), but added it after using it. I didn't like holding the post against the driver and then running the
cylinder quick before the post had a chance to move.

You want the Shaver UTD, totally self contained, trailer mounted.
Can use it behind a pickup truck, no tractor required.
