Welding extensions on drills

Last week there was a discussion about welding extensions on drills, or any other piece of round stock. I made this up after seeing one that a co-worker had made, and it works very well. If they are the same diameter just clamp and weld, if their different shim accordingly. I tack one side, then turn it and clamp, by doing a little bit at a time they come out very straight.

For those really reaching out there kind of jobs. Do you have any trouble with the flutes plugging up? Nothing like drilling a real deep hole and you hear SNAP!! Cross drilling a pivot bolt for a garden tractor front end. Man I hate that. Had to go get another case 5 bolt.

When drilling deep holes you have to back out very often, and use lots of lube. As I said last week, one time another fellow and I drilled about 2 feet in the end of a 4 15/16 shaft, it took awhile!

I have made drill extensions by turning the drill shank to fit a hole bored in the end of a rod and silversoldered them together. The silversolder is plenty strong in this application. It is what they use to fasten gears to shaft in transmissions.

I have always done it the way you suggest with good results. I have also extended taps and hex keys by silver soldering them into a hole in a rod.

(quoted from post at 20:26:08 06/15/18) If I did that it wouldn't work. It would end up with the angle welded to the bit.

There needs to be a "window" in the valley of the angle iron where your welding.
Otherwise the weld will mess up the straightness as you rotate and clamp it again to ad more weld.

I think the one pic shows that kinda.
