'08 Impala Dead Power Steering

My son's '08 Impala power steering is dead. Steering wheel is very hard to turn. Oil is full. Oil does not cycle when watching it. No leaks, squeaks,or growls. Would you say the pump is bad?

Thank you,
Glenn F.

It could be the rack seized or pump bad, both are known issues.

Make sure and flush good after repairs.

See if you can move the pulley in or out excessively, wasn't unusual to find a broken shaft in a lot of GM pumps.

You can use the unaproved redneck kids do not do this at home method...

Clamp the pressure hose (be sure it is the pressure hose) with vice grips and listen for the pump to load.

No load, no pressure.

LIFT FRONT OFF GROUND...U SHOULD BE ABLE TO GRAB & TURN TIRE L & R WITHOUT ENG RUN...BE BLESSED, GRATEFUL, PREPARED...

I agree with others, just reach in there and see if shaft slides in and out. I bet shaft is broken off. Happens a lot.

Yes. Had that happen on an '08 Trailblazer. Just out of warranty. Dealer wouldn't fix it. I came unglued. He made us a very nice deal on a new Durango.

(quoted from post at 19:31:58 06/15/18) So when the warranty ends when does it really end?

When the dealer told me that the pump shaft had broken, I told him in no uncertain terms that power steering pumps do leak sometimes, but they DO NOT fail due to a broken shaft. That sort of thing simply does not happen unless the pump was a peice of junk from the get-go. I then told him that I had worked as a mechanic in this very building before the dealership bought it, and power steering pumps never fail in such a manner.

The power steering issue was the last straw on that TrailBlazer. It had already previously taken a ride on a flatbed back to the shop because of transmission failure and would not go into reverse. Still under warranty at that point. We won't even mention the many times it went into the shop because of electronics glitches.
