Lathe follow rest

Built myself a follower rest for my Clausing 13 x 36 to hopefully stop the resonance when turning rifle barrels. Made of 3/8" x 2" flat stock (1/4" x 1" for the fingers) with roller bearings and can handle up to a 3" width. Total cost was under $10

Good job. My old WWI era Monarch lathe that is about 8 feet long has the original monster rest and I use leather in it sometimes with grease to protect the stock I am working on.

Nice job! Nice looking lathe - I like looking at other folks lathes, and the stuff they make with them.

I never thought about using greased leather Richard.

That's very nice. Have you ever read books by Guy Lautard?

Can't say that I have. I just looked for a follow rest that would fit my lathe and decided I couldn't afford anything I saw so had to build it.

It's good reading for any machinist, but even more so for a gun guy.

Sometimes rollers on the fingers cause grief when a chip gets between the roller and the the work. Usually cause the stock to bump outward and then the tool makes a little gouge in the surface. if your chips are curling nice and not flipping around rollers are good.

I have two sets of fingers, one with rollers and the other with bronze pads. The pads slide on the surface so chips don't get between them and the work. Do have to oil the stock as you turn though, so can be a bit messy.

Like all things in machining, there are places where one tool can't work in all situations.

His books are hard to come by now and expensive if you find one. He had a divorce and the wife got the rights to the books if I recall correctly and she is punishing him. Had some darn good books on machine work.

Agreed. I put them on my Christmas list many years ago, and have referred back to them both for tech info and entertainment.

Been there and tried that. I agree that the roller bearings cause more grief than they fix, need a wiper in front of them at the least. You probably know this but a follow rest will only work for straight barrels. I tried all kinds of things for tapered barrels and never did find a satisfactory fix other than run the spindle very slow with a free cutting HHS tool and feed the tool heavily. The surface finish was of course terrible due to slow surface speed but a trip to the polisher loaded up with 140 grit polish o ray took care of that quickly.
