Chasing threads and cleaning the threads should be done on any critical load . Otherwise the device will not torque down square and even . A cause of many phantom head gasket problems .
On cylinder blocks the top thread can stretch up and out a few thou. Another cause of phantom leaks .

When I do a head gasket I spend a lot of time cleaning and
chasing the bolt holes in the block your right otherwise it
won?t torque down right

An old Farmall mechanic told me after I clean and chase the threads to mix up a portion of graphite and motor oil to lubricate the threads, then torque them down.

It?s a half inch impact with an adapter made buy Irwin that drives at tap I don?t use em often but when I need em they?re worth there weight in gold

I chase tapped holes on most everything I work on and clean the bolt threads on a wire wheel. Rust in threads is bad for taps. Wheel bolts and the like get a squirt of PB or Kroil to loosen the rust before I tap. I only tap carefully by hand, since I retired I have no source for new taps.

I've been known to chuck the tap in my cordless drill when I have several holes to clean up. Saves a ton of time.

Yes it would if a guy a powerful drill a few of these holes 1/2 inch made the ol impact hit a few times

I picked up this set about ten years ago from harbor freight for around 70$ With coupon it goes from 1/8 to 1?? taps and dies nc and nf. I keep it In the service truck everywhere I go . They had a metric set I was always going to get but They haven?t carried either set in 8 years or so

Keep an eye out on ebay and CL,I have 3 sets of Greenfield tap and dies I've picked up cheap and they are about the best. They have a nice wooden box with wooden trays and have a space for each part.

"Kroil" Good stuff. Our machine shops used it when I was working and I use it on really tough jobs, for sale online. Pricy but worth it. PB works for me on all other jobs and is affordable.

I use pb or liquid wrench usually liquid wrench because it?s a couple dollars cheaper than pb but whatever Is on sale of the two

We had two sets like that in the farm shop growing up back when tools were really made to last they were a nice set of taps
