O-T Tim-Bor

I need some input from some smart fellers. Have any of you used Tim-Bor or other Boron based wood preservatives? Did you like them, and do they live up to the promises of stopping wood boring insects and rot? I have a very old log cabin on my property that I would like to keep. Terminex wants quite a pretty penny for their treatments.

All of those products contain Borax. Nothing really special about them.

You can make your own wood treatment by mixing a borax laundry soap like 20 Mule Team (I like it) with about anything from plain water to hydraulic oil.

I've used Tim-Bor for years to control the Powder Post Beetles in my crawl space. Works great and is reasonable to buy. One thing to notice is when mixing make sure it is completely dissolved or it will tend to plug your sprayer.

It makes a good fire retardant too. If you are going to spray and are mixing with water make sure it is not hard water it will precipitate all the lime out and plug up your sprayer.
