Watch Recomendation

Wife's birthday is the 31st.

Her watch recently started loosing time (thanks to a Walmart tech that didn't put the back on tight and it got water in it).

I want to get her a new one, looking for something practical and reliable, but not ridiculously over priced.

Any suggestions? How to avoid fakes?

I just want some guidelines, I'll take her to pick it out.

Thanks!

Just got my wifa a bulova. The one i got heris about 260 everywhere. Got it at Sam's for 145. Stainless case and band, diamonds on the hours. Citizen, omega, bulova and invicta are all nice. I have one of each.

The one i got her.

My wife is now ' Of an age ' where it's becoming difficult for her to see the dials of most of her beautiful watches . So now unfortunately most of the expensive ones she has are jewelry rather than time pieces to her . A bigger dial with either contrasting or larger numerals might be a good idea .
Seiko is a brand tried and trusted with a truly staggering range of classic designs , quality with extreme reliability for a middle of the road price .

I'm sold on Seiko but have not seen any around lately.

Don't know if they are still around.

Hmm, practical and reliable? Depends a lot on your wife but mine likes to keep track of the number of steps she takes in a day so a Garmin Vivofit 3 was her choice. Waterproof, a year's life on the battery, and synchronizes with the computer so the time is accurate. It isn't jewelry but practical.

My wife and I prefer solar-powered watches from Casio, Citizen, and Seiko. The Casio solar watches are generally sporty / utilitarian rather than dressy, and most sell in the $50 to $100 range, the Citizen and Seiko solar watches are usually dressier and sell in the $100 to $200 range.

Casio's G-Shock watches, in particular, have earned a reputation for being especially durable.

John, the solar sounds interesting.

Have you had them long enough to know the practicality?

Do they charge with normal indoor light exposure, or do they need to be in the direct sun?

I assume the battery will eventually need to be changed, but just not as often?

Thanks!

Charles, that is one reason I'm taking her o pick it out.

The one she has now is tiny, don't know how she can read it!

Thanks!

Steve --

We've had solar watches for somewhere between ten and fifteen years, and overall, we're very pleased with them. The larger watches pick up enough light indoors to keep going for several months, but some of the smaller ones need a day of sunshine every few weeks. As you might guess, it's the dressier, and thus smaller, women's watches that need the extra light.

A co-worker had a Citizen Eco-Drive watch that, after nearly twenty years, wouldn't hold a charge for more than a few days. He told me that the cost of repair closely approached the replacement cost of the watch, but he found an online video about do-it-yourself replacement of the "rechargeable battery" capacitor. He then told me that he bought a replacement capacitor online for $5 (if I remember right) and that it took about 15 minutes to open up the watch, replace the capacitor, which was in a spring-loaded holder like those used in battery-operated watches, and close up the case. The watch needed a few minutes in the sun before it started running.

I am not a watch wearer but when I was a kid I found a Bullova in the town dump and it still works . Circa 1960s. Then again it was wound very little sitting in my drawer.

steve check out the citizen eco drive watches. both motion and light run the watch. i have one for about 12 years now.

Timex I had were JUNK ! Back in high school around 1980 ? I got a Pulsar and it is still working good to this day ! It's been dropped some, been arms length under water too. Still going. Don't know if they are still built this good or not ? But if this one ever dies I'll try another Pulsar for sure.
