ceiling fan

Ceiling fan is 12 years old (from lowes). It has a hum when in use, louder on high than on low. Time to replace or repair. What causes the hum. Thanks

Those fan have sealed bearing and as they get older the grease in them goes bad and dries out. That can/will cause them to hum or make other noises. On most one can open them up and lube the bearings I know this because I have done so in the past

I was asked to replace one that quit working. I cleaned it and it works perfectly. Have you cleaned yours? They are a very small motor. Dust will create too much drag for them to run at their proper RPM>

Also besides cleaning, make sure all the screws in the covers are tight.

Check the hanger mount. Some have a rubber isolater that may have slipped or fallen out.

And if it is on a variable speed switch at the wall, be sure it is for ceiling fan application.

We bought a Hunter over 25 years ago and it runs 95% of the time and no problems a very quite. All you hear is air moving.

Are you using it on a dimmer or speed control. If so bypass the speed control, if the hum goes away you probably have the wrong speed control.

Hello runwoolf,

Usually the hum comes from a bad capacitor, it will change pitch by changing speed. The hum is more noticeable in one of the speeds. It may go away and just be on one speed. It's a black square that sits inside the switch housing of the fan. If it is a screeching noise then it's time for a clean-up and lube job,

Guido.

Start simple before you rip the fan apart.

First things to check..

Are the blades balanced.. Is the fan level.

Both unbalanced blades and an out of level fan will make even a new fan hum. Especially at higher speeds.

Next..

A wiring error; the (wall) switch not rated (or matched) for the motor control/supply, specifically using a light switch not dually rated for supplying the fan.

Kept the original receipt? A lot of ceiling fans have lifetime warranties.

You need to check into that.. Most only have a Limited Lifetime warranty on the motor and nothing else.. Most Circuit board, switches, capacitors, lights or other parts are only covered for one or two years.

I have a Harbor Breeze 16yrs old made noise a year ago like that cleaned and let it go still going noise stopped.

How right you are! When I got married over 40 years ago, the Hunter fans were way beyond our budget. I bought two D.E.M.C. fans from a store called "Handy Dan". About ten years ago, one of the fans started making a 'dry' sound. I disassembled it and found two bearings that had gone dry. As I worked in construction I took the bearing to our supplier. He laughed and said 'Replacing the bearings on your Unisaw, eh'? I told him it was for a ceiling fan and he was surprised, as it's the same bearing for a Delta Unisaw. That ceiling fan is STILL running--no Chinese junk here.
