Grease Guns

Can someone tell me how the old grease guns worked that did not have a pistol grip or lever pump. I am talking about the old ones that you just pushed the plunger from the back end. It would seem to me that if you were pushing the grease from the end like a tube of toothpaste it would be difficult to get grease fittings to take grease.

The rod you are pushing on is the only thing there is. When you pulled back on the rod you are supposed to get a little more grease. Next you push again. Very low pressure and volume. Joke

We had a couple like that and yes you are lever when you push the handle that pushes the grease and your right if it?s a tight fitting grease don?t go in

It was an Alamite grease gun and you put the end on the grease zirk and shoved on the Alamite gun which forced grease into the zirk. the more you pumped the gun the more grease was forced in.

My Father had a couple of those. Hand loaded with bulk grease.

Simply pushing the gun using the handle on the back pumped a small amount of grease into the zerk.

They worked well for cars if clearances allowed, but not so well for farm equipment where large quantities of grease might be needed. You could spend an hour or more greasing a 7' drag disc with one of the small Alemite guns. BTDT.

I have one of those little ones hanging around here somewhere, never tried using it. I have enough trouble with the new ones, seems they leave so much of the grease in the tube.
