Twin-tank portable air compressor

Trying to get this air compressor working. Got engine parts coming.

Wondering about what this 4-way does, coming directly off of the compressor before it goes in the tank. Looks like a copper line (1/4" maybe) coming off of it, but it looks to have been broken off.

Engine driven pump, it's an unloading valve to vent the output when the tank is pressurized. This one is missing the adjusting stem. The small line could be to knock the throttle back to idle when the valve trips. Probably best to replace it.

I'm guessing it is part of an unloader, looks like part is missing.

Are there spring loaded diaphragms on top of the cylinder heads? That is probably where the 1/4" line went. When the pressure is up to set point, the unloaders open the intake valves on the compressor to stop the pumping.

If it's a gas or diesel engine, that's how it works instead of stopping and starting the engine.

Need a bigger picture or more info...

It looks what is called an unloader or a pilot valve. Your compressor
pump should have little air powered pins in the head that push open
the intake valves when the pressure in the tank reaches a
predetermined pressure. Looks as if someone tryed to fix or adjust the
pressure. You CAN'T mess with them. They are on Ebay for 30 or 40
bucks. Buy a new one .

Unloader Valve as others have stated. Being on a twin pac tank. It most likely was used for running nail guns on some construction or roofing jobs.

Borrowed your photo.

The inlets can be switch from the side to the top if needed.

Throttle control tube is missing.

Pilot Valve/Manual unloader. The one on your unloader is missing. They can be adjusted on some models. But NEVER to more than around 40 PSI.

The hex nut on the back side with the hole is the exhaust. Excess air escapes from it when the tank is filled from Maximum (cut out) and low (cut in)pressure while the engine is running.
============

You can buy new ones like yours for around $50.00.
To be honest. I would not trust any unloader that has missing parts or signs of being tampered with..

Well that was quick. Looked on Ebay and the very first picture matched
yours to a tee. Look at 191922657377. Little over $50.oo.

Thanks to each of you. Great information. Once I get all my engine parts and it running, I'll order the Unloader Check Valve.

On the engine look for the throttle Kick Down Control unit.

It will look something like this. It may be longer, shorter and have a different mounting type. The wire (known as a bullwhip) that connects to the engine may be a short wire or a long cable. Others may have a threaded rod with two hex nuts (adjuster and a jam nut). The small tube connects to it from the Unloaders throttle control.

You can test one using a rubber tipped cone blow nozzle set at about 30-40 psi max pressure while the trigger is pulled. When you blow air into the end of the Kick down control the cable or rod should move outward. Once the air is shut off it should retract. Same with the engine running. Add air and the engines RPM will slow. Shut the air off and the RPM will increase to WOT.

When the system works correctly it Saves fuel and by not running the engine and compressor under load continuously they run much run cooler and prolongs their life.
