Last winter I mentioned that I had built some air compressors from air conditioner pumps, this is the one that I regularly use in my shop. It's a V-twin from a Chrysler New Yorker, and a 1 hp water pump motor. The tank is a steel fork truck propane tank, the place I retired from switched to AL tanks so the steel ones became available. The propane supplier suggested I take all the fittings out of it and stand it open end down to let all the gas escape, as it's heavier than air. I let it sit for a month and then welded everything directly to the tank with no problem. I have used it regularly for 25 years and it works well. Every fall it gets a workout blowing out the sprinkler system, so then I change the oil in it.

Yeah, looks better than most of the commercial ones today. Here's a tip: pipe the exhaust from a warmed-up late-model car (emission-controlled, that is) into a tank with explosive fumes, the exhaust is inert and will displace the fumes. I've welded gasoline tanks with fuel still in them that way.
