Sort of a Tool...Old Electrical

This was taken out of service just today from my building. I'm sure many of you know what it is but in case you don't I'll just leave it here for guesses.

Looks like you found a copper mine! Ha.

So, the little switch makes the big switches contact? High power relay?

As first quick look it reminded me of an old phone, with the arm out to the side, but of course not that with the size of power involved and the
switch at the bottom.

Could probably sort out the model numbers that are fuzzy, but I'll wait and see what it is and be surprised.

Reminds me of a motor contactor in machines I use to have. That one would have been a very large motor.

2 pole, single throw, normally open power relay?

I have a very similar relay made by Automatic Switch Company (Asco). Mine's a 2 pole, double throw (both poles have NO and NC contacts).

It is VERY heavy!

Circled in black is the replacement for the older, much cooler looking unit. The red outline is the approximate footprint of the old one.

The latest date on it is 1941 which pre-dates the building it was installed in. I'm guessing the design was used well after the drawing was done.
It was used to switch on emergency lighting. If the commercial power goes out it turns on the 48VDC lights which operate from the battery plant in the CO.
It was getting intermittent on monthly testing and the windings were making a loud rattling noise.
