Repairing a elongated hole

The center pin hole on a John Deere snow blade is enlarged & elongated this blade connection allows left & right movement of blade.Hole size should be 3/4 inch and is in 5/16 inch plate steel. For repair I've been thinking about welding in top & bottom steel bushings. Would the bushing be a good repair? Thanks .

A collar would be a better repair than a bushing. Five sixteenths isn't much of a plate so a collar welded on would give it more strength. If it was thicker material I would suggest getting a 3/4 inch carbon rod and place it in the worn hole and weld the material around it.

In a pinch could you use a water soaked dowel stick? Carbon rod sounds nifty. Going back to that hole. On my big garden tractor the two lifting rods for the deck had pretty egg shape holes. Lucky for me one of the rods was not too bad. Welded around the outside of the holes. Took a 4 1/2 grinder with a sanding disk and surfaced the bars smooth. Lastly you sandwich them together and use clamps and vice grips. Take your time on a drill press and use the best guess to redrill your holes. Came out amazingly well. With any bar, take your time and be careful.

Mine is in the same condition. I was going to grind the surface smooth and weld another piece of steel over the hole with the correct size hole pre-drilled in it. I think on mine it got wallowed out because there was about an inch space between the pin hole and the shaft.

I never tried it , but a copper pipe then weld around it. I have welded holes shut using copper backing plate.

Find a piece of black pipe. Hammer it into an oval shape to fit the elongated hole. Weld it in. Grind it smooth. Drill it out to 3/4".

I had the draw bar on my tractor oval out from use.. I drilled out larger and installed one of those catagory 1, 2, or 3 bushings in the hole with a large washer welded to the top with same hole size.. I can sit it in the hole with the washer holding it from falling through.. has worked well but eventually wears out.. I have made a few of these to keep on hand to replace.. but saves the drawbar..

Yes as long as a longer 3/4" rod will not be a problem.
A steel "bushing" will cost more than a steel set collar though.
I have reconstructed many a hole by welding a one piece steel set collar over the old hole.

We used to rebuild hammers for Disintegrators, the hole for the pin would wallow out to an egg shape. We had a length of brass rod that was part of a jig, stick the hammer on the jig with the brass rod poking up through the hole then weld around the brass rod. We had to use a jig because if we didn't get the hole back were it belonged it was impossible to balance.
