i have a 20 gal parts washer with motor. what is a good cleaning solvent for tranmission parts. i want to manually inspect & clean
valve body & spools. any suggestions for products.

Stoddard solvent is close to what Safety clean uses.

Naphtha will work, diesel if you can stand the smell.

The solvents are expensive, and it will quickly evaporate, leaving the gunk behind.

That's why I gave up on mine at home. I just carry everything to work now, use theirs.

Two cases of brake clean would be a damm good place to start... 24 cans will clean up all the internal transmission parts are I would have 24 cans on standby... The valve body will eat 3 cans are so that's about as cheap as its gonna get...

(quoted from post at 20:35:11 03/22/18) I use the parts washer machine cleaner solvent that Tractor Supply Sells, had good results.
have also been using the TSC PSC 1000 solvent for several years and been happy with it.It does not have a strong odor, and does not evaporate to amount to anything if the lid is kept closed. It is not cheap though, $40.00 for 5 gallons.

Is this a REAL parts washer with an explosion proof motor designed for flammable solvent, including having a fusible link to drop the lid in case of fire?

Or a "china" unit with a basically a plastic submersible pump like you'd use in a decorative waterfall in which you must use water and "soap"?

Whatever you decide to go with make sure it is not a water based solvent like some of the citrus ones are.

Many friction materials/clutches in automatic transmissions are bonded with compounds that will turn to mush if exposed to water.

How well does ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) work in a parts washer? It is very high detergent, not too volatile and smells OK. Some auto shops used to use it as hand cleaner.

Mineral spirits works well. Very close to what Safety-Kleen uses. Cleans well, minimal odor, not flammable. I tested it for my own purposes for flammability. With direct exposure to a hot flame such as a torch, some will burn slowly, but will go out as soon as heat source is removed.
Cost is another issue. Last I bought some, it cost me about $8.00 to $10.00 per gallon. For a 20 gallon cleaner, that adds up quick.
Also, using mineral spirits, figure about 8 to 10 transmissions before it gets dirty to the point of needing a change. For one thing, you end up contaminating it with transmission fluid. Most of the dirt (obviously) comes off the outside of the case. Cleaning the case separately using a different method will greatly extend the life of the solvent.
Also note that the safety police will be all over you if you make a decision that does not please them.

A side note: Naphtha would be a poor choice due to high volatility and high flammability. Very similar to gasoline in flammability. Gas stations used to sell it from a separate pump as "white gasoline."

Wow! this topic comes up once a month here. Always the same variety of answers! I use 5 gallons of Kerosene and a gallon of Gunk degreaser.
