washing machine

Tool in a way. Maytag washer, top loader, dial controls about 19-20 years old Would that possibly have a drive belt in? For some time it would not spin out with a heavy load (just my robe) now it has gotten so it shakes bad on empty spin and will not spin with lite load. Wondering if had a belt because it acts like a slipping belt and now like missing sections of the belt. Or would it be in transmission?Just wondering if could be easy repair before I go buy a different washer. And I just had to get a new freezor today as old one quit yesterday

When my GE washer started slipping it turned out to be the main tub bearing. Lots of videos of specific machines at appliancepartspros.com

It is easy to pull the front cover, two screws at the bottom to remove and pull out the bottom and top will come off clips. Then you can check it out.

Could be belt...if it has one, that or clutch worn out, or gear in transmission stripped, maybe bearing...those usually make noise (either squealing or steady rumble) before they fail completely.
Check the easy stuff first.

If it can be fixed, fix it. From what I have gathered the new washing machines are practically worthless. They take forever to cycle and don't use enough water to actually clean the clothes. TDF

If I need to replace now it will be a used machine. Something to last me 6-10 months.

We are having a similar problem with a Whirlpool Estate, maybe 10 years old. Problem started after we tipped it over looking for a leak, didn't find anything. We decided to put it in a drip pan because of a few oil drops damaged the tile grout, and now it shakes. Took the cover off of it and all the springs and wear pads look fine, going to take it out of the drip pan later today. This one is direct drive, no belt. The leak ended up being the shut-off valve in the wall behind it.

Sir, May I suggest you inspect the clutching sprags.
These plastic gears move the agitator when operating.
These are located under the agitator top cap.
Good luck, j

Leroy - Two screws on the front will let you take the whole front off so you can see what is going on.

And how would I do that? I think the agitator should come out but have no idea how to get it out.

And how do I find those 2 screws? Do you have to lay it on its back to see them? Or does the top lift up someway?

When I have questions like this I generally go to youtube, put in the make, model, and problem, and about always get some response that helps me. gm

I agree with you Dog, since they use less water you have to wash smaller loads. Takes twice as long to get the job done. Where?s the savings, my time is worth something! At least to me.

Yes should have a belt. You need to tip or back and the front should have a couple screws/bolts close to the bottom that you remove and then tip the front up and off. Belt should be able to be seen pretty easy. I have a roper washer that will some times do that but if we stop it and then help it spin up it will work just fine. I have a new belt in the cabinet that is above the washer so when it does get to the point it will not spin up I'll replace it. I'm sort of lucky one of the deer hunters I have is a guy who buys and sell used and new things like that and sells them but it is his business. Calls his place Willies recondition appliances so when I have question on something I just call him

No - they are visible along the bottom of the front. Take them out, and the whole front panel will swing out and unclip from the top. You've fixed more complicated things than this Leroy - I've been watching you :~)

Get the model number and punch it in Google. My guess would be that this isn't belt drive. Maytag is owned by Whirlpool and they went to direct drive early 90's (based on a w/d set we have from 1990).

There are separate issues at play here. Not spinning is tied to clutching action and excessive wobble can be worn or broken tub supports.

Google will show you things to look at so far as more common problems as well as how to fix them. You will also see places for parts as well. One of my favorites is Repair Clinic where you get parts and often times videos showing how to do the fix.

So far as new replacements we bought a top loading Maytag about 8 years ago and have had flawless service. Daughter got the same level Maytag 2 years ago and it too has been great. I am old school and won't buy the fancy front loaders.

Local appliance parts guy will tell you to never buy Samsung and LG. Local appliance repair guys won't do Samsung warranty work because of constant callbacks.

Agitator is bolted on from the top. You have to pull the top piece off and you can then get a LONG socket extension in there to unbolt it.

There are springs that hold the drum up when you had that turned one could have come loose. On the direct drive there are rubber bushings that wear they could need replacing. Well worth the time to fix new ones are not as good.

I have a Maytag washer, probably 35 years old and the belt or belts was replaced once by a service technician. I will do it myself if they go bad again. I?m sure the front panel comes off and I?m sure you can see the belt if you lay the washer on it?s back or side.
