NEMA 6-50P?

Okay, I have a Miller 172 mig welder that seems to have what I've ID'd as a NEMA 6-50P male plug on it. Problem is that the ground lug on the male plug is ROUND, not a U shaped piece. All the female receptacles I'm seeing locally are shaped for the U shaped ground lug. I'm not much for strong language on the internet, but Sweet Mother of Moses! What am I looking for, do I have the right nomenclature and why do some sites show the 6-50P as having the U shaped lug and others the round one!!! :evil:
 
I think the round ground will fit the U shaped receptacle.

Being all the receptacles are U, they are designed to work with either round or U.

Did you try it?
 
Bob posted all those pictures of plugs and receptacles yesterday under rusty6's post have a look. gobble
 

The metal that the round ground pin on the plug, is U shaped in the receptacle, so it will have a little spring to it to make good contact with the round pin.

Okay guys, I'll try and get one locally and see if it fits, looks like the U shaped hole will be too small but I guess it's the only way to tell. Thanks!
 
All, at least all I've seen, have the NEMA number on the face of the plug and recept. So you shouldn't have to guess If it has a 6-50 on it it should work.

I've looked all over the plug Ken. No numbers I can find and the manual doesn't seem to have it either.
 
The 6-50R is for 250V. Very common for welders needing 50amps single phase 250v.

Just be aware that there is a 5-50R made that is for 125V and looks like a giant household 15amp plug. And it looks just like the 6-50R but..........

do not buy the 5-50R by mistake because the wide blade socket is on the wrong side for 250V.
