Whirlpool type bathtub installation

Putting in new bathroom, boss wanted to put in whirlpool type bathtub by Maax. Some people I've talked to recommend a mortar pad to set tub in, because of the whirlpool action. I talked to Maax techanical support, they say not necessary if not weight 300 plus lbs. I won't be using it & girl friend is no where near that. Anybody have experience in this?

I have a Maxx whirlpool tub I installed about ten years ago. It was one of two Maxx tubs installed in bathroom remodels. Regardless what the factory says I worked in grout after the tubs were installed. It really firmed up the floor of the tubs You must have access to the rear of the tubs to do this. I don't know how you would place the grout bed before installing the tubs. You will also need a place near the tub to install the pump. Mine went in an adjacent closet with a removable cover over it. Like you the boss here was adament we install a whirpool tub. I don't believe she has ever been in it and i have been it maybe twice. You can't go wrong installing Maxx tubs. Top notch quality. Best in the market. I'm sure this last statement will get an argument from the "brain trust".

I installed mine 15 - 20 years ago, I don't remember. It is tub, shower walls, and roof in shower, all 1 piece, Acrylic. The pump and plumbing was all attached. The whole thing is one unit. If I recall, there was a pad glued to the bottom of the the tub. I set the whole thing on the floor, no concrete or mud. Have never had a problem. I had to remove a wall, but I got it in there.

Use to do that for a living, and always used bagged gypsum and mixed with water , poured on floor and let tub settle into mixture where lip of tub rested on tile deck. Installed lots of whirlpool tubs in the day. Most famous one was for woman who played Wonder Woman.

My brother-in-law bought a house with some fancy tub with jets in it. It is upstairs in master bathroom. One day water dripped on his head from the ceiling below. Turns out a line in one of the jets was leaking. When the tub was installed, they put tile around it on the floors and walls. In order to fix the leak, they will have to rip all the tile out to get at the line that is leaking. They just quit using the tub.

we had a jet tub once, they are not good for taking a soaping bath as a portion of the dirty water remained in the jets and associated piping after it was drained. also, it took a lot of water just to cover the nozzles in order to use the jets but our primary dislike, we just did not find the jetting soothing or relaxing. we much prefer taking just a hot bath or shower.

We put one in 20 years ago when we built our present house. Two years ago, we took it out 'cause we never used it and all it was doing was killing space. It was one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time.

For one thing, even with a 60 gallon water heater, it ran out of hot water before it got to the level I wanted. Then the BIG catch was, when you're achy enough to need it, you're too stove up to get in and out of the dammed thing easily. If you do soak in hot water, you reverse the benefits with the contortions it takes to get back out.

We took the tub out, put a 48" shower in its place, and built a linen closet where the original shower was. If anyone insists they need a tub bath, our other bathroom has a tub/shower combination.

I've heard of people using canned foam insulation (minimal-expanding!!) rather than mortar bed as it helps to keep water hot longer.

In any case, I would want "something" under the tub. If anyone ever slipped in the tub or if there were guests, or if the house were ever sold, not having that support might be a bad thing.

This doesn't address your question but...
You will likely use that tub a bit at first but then it will just sit there.
I remodel bathrooms for a living.
I have torn out I'll bet 3 dozen of those things in my life and most of them looked brand new. They just don't get used.
A lot of people don't have big enough water heaters to even fill one of the larger ones.
They sound nice and all that but they're a big waste of $ imo.
Maybe you'll be different though. Most people aren't.

especially when you turn it on.. and see dried up hair and soap come shooting out.... That will stop the use of the tub by the more delicate in the family. And make sure you NEVER ever use one in a motel, hotel, or spa.....

Can you say....

Legioneers disease???

If you instal it, I would set it in some mortar.

I agree with the others, might have used ours 5 times in 15 years, mostly when kids were little and went swimming.

Does not add value to home.
