Well I finally got my brake drum fro a large blue bird school bus . I am going to make s forge with it. I think that I will use plate steel in the bottom of the drum to put my firebricks on so they can t fall thru hub hole . I think it will work ok . Only thing is the drum is already heavy .

Hello azpeapicker,

Easy solution, line the bottom with some fire brick. Got to be lighter then steel plate, and it will retain heat,

Guido.

azpeapicker: I've made a few homemade forges, and plate steel works well to cover the bottom, but make sure it's reasonably thick as it will get hot and can burn through otherwise. Also, you'll presumably be attaching your tuyere to it and will want the extra thickness to support it properly. One thing I learned is to angle the holes in your tuyere somewhat--if you do what many people do and just cap the tuyere off and drill a few vertical holes in the end of it you'll only get good airflow (and thus a good, hot fire) in the small vertical area directly above the tuyere. By drilling some holes at an angle, you'll get more distributed air flow, and that is best done before installing the tuyere. One one of my first attempts I had to do this after I had everything welded together, as that was when I discovered the problem with only having a small area of good heat, and it made the job of drilling angled holes a lot more difficult.

I built one years ago but never did finish it. I need to mount the blower and also hook the store pipe up to the wood stove chimney. Not a high priority thing so never finished it

Hi there ! I get a magazine called "The Backwoodsman" from time to time. They had an article recently on how to make a brake drum forge. I bet if you went to their site you could find their article. Was written by a guy named Dave Canterbury. An interesting article. Was going to try it sometime if I ever get any "free time".

That will work fine. While you're at it go to the hardware store and get 3 pipe flanges to bolt to that steel plate for the legs to screw in to.
