Serial numbers ( 1 for the guru's )

I have a IH 454 1972,by the operators manual the serial number for the motor is on the right hand side, looking from the rear to the front, no number was found,by a parts book I have it says left side by the oil filter, I found a number there. By the parts manual I have it says this tractor came with 3 different motors C157 and a C175 gas plus a C175 diesel,my question is how can I tell which motor is in my tractor. It's a gas C1???. The serial number is 405856R1.

You say the serial number is 405856R1.

NOPE, that's not the serial number.

It's the engine block CASTING NUMBER.

And 405856R1 appears to be the BLOCK CASTING NUMBER for a C157 engine.

The number you have there is the casting number or part number for the block. My Google search for that number indicates it is a C157 engine block. The serial number plate is supposed to be on the clutch housing on the left hand side of the engine. A lot of times it is missing. There should also be a flat machined area on the right hand side of the engine just below the head with the engine serial number and the engine number. These are usually pretty gunked up so a scraper and a flash light will help finding them. They are hand stamped so they are not very deep.

Ok, I can agree with that but for where the operator
manual says it's at no number, I've found all the rest
but not that one.

It seems sometimes things that should have been stamped at the factory got missed, for one reason or another, or it could be a replacement engine from IH, or even possibly swapped from some other application, perhaps a power unit.

LOTS of things can happen over decades, and when it comes to tractors, farmers did what ever was economically viable to keep a unit operating!

Hello Txpoweranger,

Sounds like that is a replacement block. The mechanic who replaced it should have transfer the original block serial number to the new on. I always did that with my initials as well,

Guido.
