They look like salted codfish boxes.......see the little slot at the top.....they originally had a nice little wooden sliding top.
I can actually remember my Mom buying codfish in those boxes when I was a kid back in the 40s.
I like most every kind of food there is, but I did not like codfish gravy!!

to big fancy and too heavily built for cheese box.

this is a cheese box, I knew a few were hiding in "grampas shop"(what my gramps used as a shop, now a general shed). square cut a few tacs and done.

Yep, those are 5 Lb. cheese boxes. American cheese still comes in 5 lb. boxes....only they are now cardboard.

When I was a kid going to a one room school house back in the mid 40s there was a period of time when us poor rural folk received federal surplus food. Some of the items were #10 cans of peanut butter, #10 cans of jelly, 46 oz cans of orange juice and 5 lb. boxes of American cheese.
As I remember, the teacher let us take most of the cheese home to our families.....the rest of the stuff we had no problem consuming at school. The teacher used to bring in loaves of bread that he bought out of his own pocket.
I loved the orange juice.....after I got out on my own, I began drinking a small glass of OJ every day and still do today.
Fortunately, none of us kids had an allergy to peanut butter.

yep this is an American cheese box. I know if I look real close I could see it printed on there...faded and dirty but its there, as well as the plant that made it (if I look closer).
