Computer problem

I know I could go to a computer-nerd forum and read forever - but I do not want to. I thought I might get lucky and find someone here who has had the same problem - and - found a fix.

My wife's laptop slowly started losing the ability to get to certain Websites. Over the past week, more and more of them stopped working.
In fact - since I knew this place (YT Mag) is working fine from my computer - I tried it on her's and NO.

Like I said, some places it gets to fine. Google search - yes. Yahoo search - no.

We have two other computers in the house in the same wireless network and with them - all the sites work.

It has Windows 10 Home edition. We tried various browsers and that made no difference. Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, etc.

Unhooked all ant-virus programs and the Windows firewall.

I found a few people at forums that "fixed" their machines by wiping the hard-drive and doing a fresh install of Windows 8 instead of 10.

So, we just went to Walmart and bought a new laptop so my wife can transfer all her data. When done - I guess I will attempt to fix this thing and keep it for a spare.

I can't really say what your problem but if you reload windows do a restore point and backup everything first. A few weeks ago I was having trouble with mine freezing up and running slow so I downloaded from Microsoft and used the "save personal files" option. It left all the files alone but knocked out any third party software programs. My CAD, antiviruses, google earth, all the visual C++ programs and a lot more. Didn't have a warning about that.

you say you can't 'get to' certain sites, but what are the results of trying? no response, error response or??????

in any case, try clearing cache, cookies etc.

No response and it times out. I cleared the cache and cookies. That was one of the first things I did.

Try hooking the laptop directly to the router with a network cable.
If that works, then there's a problem with the 'puters built-in WiFi.
If that's the case, then it could be either hardware OR software based. Try Googling for possible solutions as it's right near impossible to diagnose something from afar. All I'm doing here is throwing some ideas/possibilities your way.
One work-around is to buy a WiFi dongle that plugs into a USB port ($25-50) and try that.
Good Luck.

Hello JDM,

Try reverting to an earlier date. I would think a week back from the trouble date!

Guido.

Smells like a virus. Maybe not. I left windoz a long time ago due to crap like this.all.the.time.

Try rvirgil_KS suggestion and see if that works. If not I would wipe 10 off it and install Ubuntu (free OS) and have a working puter again.

John, I think the float valve in its carburetor is sticking
Take your air hose and put some pressure to it. Sorry, I'm not a compuker geek. Just a tractor guy. HeHe

Did you try the Edge browser that comes
with windows 10? I have seen it work when
none of the others would. You should clear the
browser History, Cookies and Cache in the other browsers
before you do a system recovery.

Are all your computers Windows 10? I had a laptop on 10 that wouldn't boot up. To make a long story short, I took it back to the store I bought it several times. Now I'm on Windows 7 and happy with it.

ALL the Windows 10 he has sold are having the same issue. Might unplug it for 5 to 10 minutes and see if it will work ONCE. No permanent fix for it yet according to him. DOUG
