Down below there is a pic of a draw knife. Dad never had a draw knife or a spoke shave. When he wanted to size a handle for a hammer or an axe, he would use a piece of broken window pane to shave the handle. It took awhile, but worked. Anyone else use this method?

Yes, I have used that method, the way my dad taught me. Although last week I fit a new handle to an old shovel, used a 4.5 inch grinder with a flap wheel. joe

Yes, and it works nicely, though it's also a good way to slice a finger, especially when the glass breaks unexpectedly, as I can vouch, though luckily nothing a band-aid couldn't stop. I've also used card scrapers (sometimes called cabinet scrapers) and have picked up a few different Stanley #80 scrapers from people who didn't know they weren't s spokeshave and had no idea how to sharpen or set them up. Both require a bit of skill and patience to sharpen, tune, and use, but the results can give you capabilities you will have a hard time matching with any other tool. I especially like the #80's for taking off excess glue, and they can come in handy for stripping finish as well, besides their normal use to flatten and true up surfaces.

I have heard in the old days they would scrape hardwood floors with glass to refinish them. I have seen furniture made without sanding just scraped.

If scrapers had a power cord and made noise, they'd probably still be tops in modern shops. *lol*

A properly sharpened and used scraper just can't be beat.

Draw file to sharpen, then burnish, scrape a bit, burnish again. Repeat burnishings several times, draw file again.

My Dad used to make bugles out of cow horns and he used a piece of glass to smooth the horn. A spoke shave works better for me on handles, but I have a few draw knives I have rescued.
