Calf feeding

I have 6 calfves I am feeding, hay, cracked corn, pellet supplement. 3 are steers headed to the meat locker, 3 are breed heifers due to calf in April/May. All weigh 1200 lbs. Should I be feeding the heifers differtly?

If the heifers weigh 1200 they are already well grown, feeding a fattening ration to the heifers is growing the calves they are carrying making the probability of problems during calving greater. All they need until the calves are born is hay and enough supplement to provide a total of 2 pounds of protein per day, so if you had grass hay at 7% protein and fed 30 pounds per day their requirements would be met, or 20 pounds of the hay and 3 pounds of 20% cubes. Whatever you have to balance the ration.

I second what LAA said. Hiefers and bred cows don't need the protein that fattening animals need. Watch those girls closely when they begin to calve, they may need help due to a large calf.
