The only place I can see where the snap ring might scratch anything is at the two ends.
A little "rounding" at these two points should take care of that.
Prudent use of a good set of snap-ring pliers will help as well.
I've never experienced the problem.....seems most shafts are too hard to scratch easily.

Brian - can you recommend a good set of snap ring pliers? I've read through the archives, and it seems like they don't exist for this type of ring. Folks seem to use my "whatever works" method for removal, which includes small screwdrivers and knives. I'd like to open them up, slip them on, and release them in the groove without sliding and prying them into position.

Just buy yourself a parallel snap-ring pliers. Made for the job. I have been using them for 50 years.

I have a bunch of them. My favorite are Proto (now Stanley) 251G. Made for exactly what you want. John Deere sold them. Ford sold them. IH sold them. OTC sold them. PROTO sold them. Stanley still has them.

That is an internal lock ring , it goes into a cavity, otherwise the end points will hurt you. Stare one end by pushing it down into the cavity and then work it around until it bis completely into the grove in the cavity.

I have never seen an "internal" ring like that. No way to remove it the way the ends are shaped.

There is one like that on a shaft behind the flywheel on my 45 AR. In order to remove it I drilled a hole behind it thru the ring gap. The gap was bigger than the one on this ring.

Thanks for all of the good advice. I ordered one like Moresmoke recommended. I'm saving this post for the future - just in case. Everybody needs two :~)

JDEM has a picture of the correct tool. Lot of those used on auto tranny's. I picked up one at NAPA last year.
