DRO on a small mill?

I have a friend who has a small vertical mill. He told me with brackets he made and using magnets, he's temporarily attached his digital calipers to his mill to measure the distances moving from "point a to point b" etc. and it works for him. Sounds like a clever idea, I'd like to see it and get a picture.

Here's a video on youtube for the hard mounting of a caliper to a quill for DRO on the z axis. Doing the x and y axis is very similar.

I've seen several setups like that in "The Home Shop Machinist",etc. You have to be really careful to get things firmly mounted so the caliper doesn't slip. It's about like using a dial indicator int he same way.

This is the Z axis DRO that I put on my mill and works fantastic. They are so cheap these days that I seem to remember it cost only around $130 for all 3.
