1997 F250 7.3

My son has a 97 ford with the 7.3. The other day I noticed a clicking noise toward the front of the engine, the alternator shows low voltage in time with the clicking noise. The truck starts fine, I hear the clicking in regular intervals for about 3-4 minutes after it starts, then it stops. Thought it was the glow pug relay, but as I said earlier the truck starts fine. Any Ideas. I will try and isolate what is making the noise. I assume it is a relay or solenoid. Thanks for you input.

Seems like you are explaining the normal operation for the glow plugs. The glow plugs cycle on/off after the engine is running for several minutes when cold.

yes, that is the glow plug relay turning off and on,, and it does draw a LOT of current, so the voltage will drop during this cycle.

I Really doubt it's the glow plug relay. The GPR on my '96 turns on with the turn of the key, stays on thru the wait to start light THEN stays on continuously about another two minutes. When the volt gauge goes from about 10-11 volts to 14 you know the GPR has shut off.

The exhaust back pressure valve, the flapper at the turbo outlet, sounds like a jet engine when it closes. It's 100% open or nearly 100% closed.

The only thing that can operate intermittantly is the air conditioning compressor that operates intermittantly ANY time the defrosters are on. Turn the defrosters off to just heat and see if the clicking stops.

Soon be 22 years and 302,000 miles on my '96 F-250.

Thanks for the input. I drove it yesterday and no clicking noise, but it was significantly warmer than the other day when I first noticed the noise.Sometimes I make things harder then they should be.
