Barrel lifter

I made this out of some scrap metal laying around. Copied from something similar that I had borrowed. It works slick.

That does look better and safer than using 2 vise grips and a chain. BTDT
I don't very often handle barrels though.

Looks like it should work great as long as the barrel still has the top on it.

I keep a topless barrel in the shop for scrap saw cutoffs and small stuff. I plucked a lifter like this out of scrapyard a couple years ago. It's sure better than muscling a barrel into the bucket or trying to keep it on the forks.

Yes full barrels, it puts a few dimples in but very minimal. The claws could be made different to eliminate any I would assume.

I posted this a few yrs ago I believe it is for lifting something but I don't know what probably not barrels tho. It has been used plenty by the wear on the hooks and the round ring.

This is the ultimate barrel lifter/carrier. So simple in design. You don't have to get off your vehicle to hook anything up or unhook it. Wish I had invented this!!

In case others don?t know the barrel lifter Jeff posted above is pretty ingenious. I?ll attempt to explain how it works. You approach the barrel with the forks angled down slightly. Then as the grab arms contact the barrel sides you slowly lower them. The arms are made in such a way that as they pivot up they can open. Once slid around the barrel sides and you angle the forks and lifter back parallel with the floor and lift. The lifting force caused the arms to squeeze together. So in effect the more you lift including weight the more it squeezes. It has stops that are set to hold the arms apart a certain distance to grab the barrel tight but not smash it. The company my son works for uses those quite a bit. I had never seen one until I started working there part time about a year ago helping him with maintenance.

All Naturals Gas Compressor Stations I was involved with used this very tool. Worked Great.

We ran MOBILE JET II OIL in all Gas Turbines.

Just another engineering question. This shouldn't be that hard. Can you fabricate a three arm versoin? Then it wouldn't want to slip side to side. Also you wouldn't need to get off of your tractor because if you have slightly curved ends on the arms they would splay out and then slide over the end lip of the drum and catch. Just running an imaginary diagram in my head.
