Grandfathers Molding Plane

I find this extra cool because of the price of $8.00 with metal stock, fence and 20 tool bits and a description of some of the bits also a Southern carpenter and a Western carpenter both give reviews. The western carpenter say's after finishing one house it has paid for itself. BTW I am really enjoying these tool of the day posts as well as the pic. of the day I think I can thank Loren for at least the pic of the day ones. I have a dozen or more tool pictures waiting for their big release one at a time LOL. My Grandfather worked in a furniture factory in Leominster Mass. I have many of his wooden molding planes, and other tools.

My dad had one .A number 45 something like that. Stanley made a couple different models. List on Ebay one in the box complete and in beauty condition is asking $700.oo +. My dad used to know a guy who custom made a few blades for the one he owned. The guy was a machinest and did the whole deal right up to tempering them.

So that's why you have so many 'neat' things! Wow, that plane is pretty awesome!! Never found much stuff like that in Texas back when I did woodworking. I have a couple of draw knives now; one in pretty good shape, the other needs refurbishing. Wife has her Dad's old scythe as well as another we got from auction -- hmm....now which was which?!?!? Ah, I got one! Will have to post it next time I find it. Ain't nuttin' as fancy or nice as what you have, that's for dang sure!

That Western carpenter is obviously overcharging if he has money like that to throw around! LOL

Cool tool!

Have you tried it out?

Yes I did a tongue and groove project once just to try it more then anything else.

I have a complete set in the box just like that. I used an old file and made a blade to match some old trim for a job I did one time.

I've got one just like it, along with the extra blades, that belonged to my Grandpa....but I'm not sure how much further it goes back or where he got it from.

One of these days I want to do a project using it, just to see if I can.

That is very cool. I have a couple old beading planes, but they just do one size each.
I love how the body of this thing has art cast into it.
Is the wire for hanging it for display?
