Battery Maintainers again

I have a couple of maintainers that seem to have too large of a threshold . It will allow battery to get too low of a charge before it will turn on. If a battery loses a few tenths of a volt (6 volt battery) that is a lot of charge. The later ones I have bought don't seem to do that. A few tenths for a 12 volt battery is not that big of a deal.

I have also bought some 6V/12V battery maintainers that when you plug it in you need to tell it whether you want 6 or 12 volts. The problem with that if the power goes out for a couple of seconds, the charger stops charging until you reselect the voltage desired. Unless you catch it, you may go a long time without any protection.

My 2 cents

I bought one from napa about 50.00 nothing to switch just put it on a 6v or 12 volt it knows which batt. has real long cords also

What brand and model? I have many of the 1.5 amp Schumachers from Walmart. $20 each, auto switching between 6 volt and 12 volt. 14.2 volts bulk charge, 13.2 volt float charge. They have been working flawlessly for years.

That's some info I was looking for. Do you use these for 12V batteries that don't get used for months at a time? TSC has them on sale now for $20.

Most of my Schumachers have been plugged in steady for years. I only unhook when I use a tractor. I got some of mine when on
sale at Tractor Supply. When at regular price, they are $5-$10 more then at Walmart.

The regular price is $20.00. TSC just threw an "on sale, $20.00" sign on them and people thinking they're getting a bargain gobble them up. TSC does this all the time. Many other retailers pull this trick also.

Make sure it is float charger, not a trickle charger. Battery Tender ? ? is a good name. If your battery keeps losing it's charge it may be time for a new one. How old is it? It must withstand a full charge under load to be effective. Your local starter/alternator shop can bench test usually for free as he has the proper equipment. You also can test yourself with a hydrometer. Battery specific gravity on each cell must be right or it won't hold a charge. Some of the auto parts franchise outlets will test your battery too, but I don't trust some millennium kid who is only out for the sales commission so will tell you that you need a new battery regardless if it is good or bad. Plus, do not buy any cheap bargain house battery either. Invest in a good brand like DEKA, EXIDE, or INTERSTATE.

Been using a battery tender for ten years on the battery in my hotrod. Hook it up when not in use. I pull the battery in winter months and hook it up in the basement.

Incorrect. Regular price is $24.99.

Ten years on the same battery? That makes it well worth the price.

I just pulled the battery out of my FE35 , it originally came with my TEA 20 Ferguson tractor that I bought in 2010 . The date of installation is written on a panel for warranty purposes . It says 2001 ! Not bad for a 40 AH car battery that gets used once or twice a month . I have put it on my C TEK battery charger and hopefully I may get another year or two from it .

"Charge threshold"
My batteries voltage initially drops quickly then levels off when taxed. Perhaps those 10ths of a volt are meaningless.

"Power failure reset"
I had an alarm clock that did the same thing. :(
