hydraulic hose threaded connections

Here I am again, trying to wrap my head around Hydraulics 101. With currently available threaded hydraulic fittings, do I use teflon tape, teflon goo of some kind, some special sealant I've never heard of yet, or nothing at all. I'm anticipating getting a new valve for my wood splitter. Also, any advice on how I can assure optimal tightness on these things. Please advise. Thanks.

If it's tapered pipe thread, you can use Teflon tape, Teflon sealer, Rector Seal, various thread sealing products. Just be careful not to use too much and get it in the system.

For flare fittings, oring fittings, no sealer is used.

I NEVER use any thing on them that way you never have to worry about what you use getting in to things like the pump or relief valve where it can cause odd problems

Your valve will most likely have either NPT pipe thread or O-ring boss ports. The ORB ports are easy - no sealant of any kind is required or even desirable. However, tapered threads require some type of sealant to ensure a leak-free joint. If you take a look at page S7 of this document from Parker you'll find lots of good information about what sealants can be used and how to tighten the joints properly.

loctite and others sell a white paste in a tube that works well for pipe threads. Typically, in low pressure situations, such as plugs, I put it back together without adding any product. If at all possible, find a valve with o-ring boss fittings. More reliable seal. The best seal is JIC, but that isn't really an option (that I've seen) for valves.

I would never use tape on a hydraulic fitting, unless you are really careful cleaning it out of the female threads when you take it apart next time there is a possibility of it getting in the system.

Hydraulic fittings are a wide variety of types. If we are talking regular pipe thread then yes pipe dope is what's needed, many varieties available, Teflon tape strands can cause damage to pumps and motors so best to only use in a pinch. If you are talking flare fittings like JIC, inverted flare, bsp flare, komatsu flare, sae flare, or o ring face no sealer is used on threads other than never seize to help lubricate the threads and keep them from seizing later

I've screwed a lot of pipe thread hydraulic fittings together without any sealer and have had leak free connections. The one thing a sealer might be good for is to stop the slight oil film creep around the threads from happening.
