I keep a box full of old pipe couplings, bearing races and discarded sockets for drivers. It seems like I always get the job done with nothing fancy. I also keep a few old transmission input shafts for clutch pilots.
 

Just happened to see your post. I use a length of 3" pvc pipe just a little longer than the axle. I lay a piece of wood on the pipe and get it just as straight as possible, and it will usually go right in. As you know, if it gets tweaked even a little bit, you're looking for a new one. Ask me how I know that! :oops:
