Engine Stand Update

I posted a few weeks back about ideas for a heavy duty engine stand.

Here's what I've come up with. It's built very similar to the factory built 6000 lb stands.

The worm gear is off an old winch. It's 30:1. Not sure if it will be enough or not. If not, I'll do a chain/sprocket reduction on the input. If it works ok, I'll just replace pulley with a crank.

The width is kind of overkill, but I wanted it wide enough to get my engine hoist between the legs. The legs have wheels out on the ends and I put a plate on the back end to accommodate a floor jack. Jack it up an inch and roll it around. The feet on back end are big enough for my forks to slip in and pick it up.

I still have to fab up the actual motor mounts. I will build one similar to what's on the small stand for smaller car and truck engines. I have a john deere engine here waiting that will need a side mount bracket built.

The only things I had to buy were the long ram jack and a couple feet of tube for the upright, so I'm into it for less than $100.

Excellent work, I like it! I have an OTC for the diesel engines and a homemade one that I built when I was 15 for the light stuff. But that one doesn't look anything like yours. Lol. I have been thinking about building another hd one.

That is very similar to one that they have in the automotive lab at the Vo-tech school where my friend teaches.

nice build Jeff.... mine is 15:1 so 30:1 will make you crank more but will be easier to roll it over... incorporate some type of brake on it...mine will let you roll it by hand or the torque you use will roll it... yours is nice and wide which = stabile

Do you really need a stand that often? I've had one for about 25 years and have had an engine on it twice. In hindsight I should have thrown it away and bought another one the second time. Just more junk to have to store.

Jeff,

That is a fine looking hoist. You added a lot of thought into the design.

Can I ask a question about the bottom of the hydraulic jack? Dos it sit on a plate or "ears"? I think the pressure would be concentrated if the entire unit doesn't sit on a plate.

Please, don't get me wrong, it looks great.

D.

The jack has ears cast into the bottom. The tab it is pinned to is 3/4" thick and runs out to the edges of the tube to help spread the weight.

I've probably had 15 engines on a stand in the last 25 years. The problem is this next one. There's no way I'd try to hang it on the little stand.

Maybe I'll be able to get it up on my pallet rack when I'm not using it.
