I have a question,,,,its snowing here ,,,,this morning we made homemade tomato sauce,,I went to the italian bakery not too far from us and got semolina italian bread.Dinner is not yet,but the sauce is ready. Is it ok to dip a chunk of bread in the sauce to try it out?I figured since you are Itailian decent you could let me know if it is ok.....///Larry

Hello Larry@stinescorner,

Glade you asked! Yes you can! one of the best ways to taste sauce. However the sauce should be consumed the same day , as bacteria will settle in if you save the extra sauce. You could take some sauce and put a little in on a small bowl, then you can save any leftover sauce,

GUIDO.

Hello Sean Feene,

Even a report from the New York times stated that the pilgrims were cooking gravy...........NOT.
Gravy is brown, that is what is what is on the bottom of meat while cooking with a few added ingredients. You turkey GRAVY is about the same color,

Guido.

I think calling it gravy or sauce is more of a family thing. We called it stew when I was a kid, never heard of gravy till a few years ago. Putting it on bread? ABSOLUTELY!! Every Saturday the sauce was on for Sunday dinner. A thick slice of homemade bread with a meatball on sauce was my Saturday lunch growing up.

larry, its legal only if its toasted italian bread smothered in garlic butter!!!!!!! dang i wish i could have that but my cardiologist would have a kinipshen!!!! ( do people still have kinipshens?)

glennster; Conniption, actually, and no, I don't think the expression is used much by people younger than a certain age---maybe 50. I Googled it to see if it meant what I thought it did (it does), and saw an interesting comment regarding the difference between a conniption fit and a hissy fit. Has to do with the amount of body gestures the fit thrower uses.

My cousin worked as tech support at Microsoft about ten years ago. Because he was intelligent and articulate and patient, foreign workers would come to him to ask questions about the meaning of American expressions and when to use them. I remember him telling me that one of the things he was asked to explain was the difference between ape-sh*t and bat-sh*t. He carefully explained when it was appropriate to use each expression, and I'm sure his listeners went away enriched by the knowledge.
